KINGSLEY JAMES has hailed York City’s record-breaking support as “unbelievable” and a “great occasion to be part of.”
A staggering 6,394 fans packed into the LNER Community Stadium for York’s 2-1 Vanarama National League North play-off eliminator victory over Chorley.
That figure set a new record attendance at the Monks Cross ground and is also the biggest crowd seen at a City home match in 15 years.
Although the occasion was somewhat marred by the post-match pitch invasion and throwing of flares between the two sets of supporters, first-team coach James lauded the support on show in inspiring the victory.
“The atmosphere was unbelievable," he said. "Even from the warm-up, when we came out, they were singing, chanting, banging and making noise.
“That was unbelievable from start to finish.
“The referee made us wait a long time at the end but we’ve got the job done.
“This was a great occasion and an unbelievable atmosphere for everyone involved and it was amazing to be a part of.”
James added: “I think it’s only human when you’re in those situations, for it to have an impact on you, but on the whole I thought they handled it really well.
“I think the atmosphere at the end carried some of the lads when they were exhausted.
“I thought we were the better team and deserved to go through.”
As is the case in any play-off push, the celebrations from the Chorley victory will only last a short while.
Two wins still separate York from promotion, starting with a trip to Brackley Town, who finished second in the regular season, on Saturday (3pm).
“This won’t mean that much if we go down to Brackley and don’t do our jobs,” insisted James.
“But if we play with the intensity and work-rate that we played with here then we’ll be in a good position.”
Asked what the plan was between now and Saturday was, James simply replied: “Rest.
“Rest is important and we’ve got to try and get them as fresh as we can.
“Psychologically that (excuse) has to be removed, we can’t say, ‘We’ve not had enough recovery’.
“We need to go into the game and play with the same intensity and work-rate that we have done in the last few games, which has been unbelievable.”
