YORK City will take on FC Halifax Town in the Vanarama National League next season following the latter’s exit from the play-offs.
Halifax fell to a 2-1 home defeat against Chesterfield in the pair’s play-off eliminator clash.
Veteran non-league striker Danny Rowe put the Spireites ahead after 19 minutes, with the former Bradford City man steering in a near-post header from a corner.
The visitors doubled their lead midway through the second half when Jeff King lashed a shot past Sam Johnson, again at the near post.
Town pulled a goal back a couple of minutes later through Matty Stenson’s close-range finish but were unable to find an equaliser in the final stages.
The victory for Chesterfield completes the National League play-off semi-finals line-up.
On Saturday (12.30pm), big-spending Wrexham will host Grimsby Town, who overcame Notts County in a dramatic play-off eliminator earlier this week.
Solihull Moors entertain Chesterfield in the other final four tie on Sunday (12.30pm).
Defeat for Halifax means that York will make the trip to The Shay Stadium next season, following City’s 2-0 Vanarama National League North play-off final victory over Boston United at the weekend.
As a result, the two Yorkshire sides will meet for the first time in league action in 20 years.
The last league fixture between the clubs was a 1-1 Third Division draw in February 2002, six years before Halifax Town AFC dissolved and FC Halifax Town was formed amid financial issues.
