YORK CC's Finlay Bean smashed the national record for the highest Second XI individual score with a superb innings of 441 for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire.

The previous benchmark of 322, set by former Somerset and England opening batter Marcus Trescothick 25 years ago, was eclipsed as Bean amassed an unbeaten 365 on the third and penultimate day in Lady Bay.

Bean, a 20-year-old who is not under any contract at Yorkshire, went to his quadruple ton on Thursday morning before being bowled by leg-spinner Calvin Harrison, the most expensive bowler with figures of 2-174.

The Harrogate-born opener thumped 52 fours and three sixes in a mammoth 518-ball innings which spanned just eight minutes shy of 12 hours.

Yorkshire boasted a 280-run lead at lunch on the final day, sitting on 814 for seven in response to Nottinghamshire's 534.

That is a club record score for Yorkshire, beating the 602 for eight that was registered against Gloucestershire at Bristol last season.

Elsewhere, Yorkshire stars Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have retained their places in England's starting 11 for the Test match against India at Edgbaston, which starts tomorrow (10.30am).

Following wicketkeeper Ben Foakes' withdrawal through coronavirus, there had been speculation that Bairstow could be be moved down the order and take the gloves.

However the in-form former St Peter's School pupil will stay at number five, with Root a spot above.

Former Yorkshire ace Alex Lees continues as an opener while Harry Brook continues to wait for his Test debut.
