JOHN ASKEY believes that York City should have taken at least a point after their 2-1 defeat at Maidstone United.
Two goals in as many minutes from Sam Corne overturned Lenell John-Lewis’ early opener to condemn York to their first Vanarama National League defeat of the season.
City controlled much of the game, but were undone by two swiftly executed and well-worked goals from United.
“I think we should have got something,” said manager Askey. “In the second half, we didn’t play, I think we got drawn into how they play.
“The two centre halves stopped getting on the ball and playing out, and we need to do that and get control of the game.
“The two goals that we conceded were disappointing, not defending from wide positions well enough and you can’t do that.
“I don’t think they created loads (of chances), we had one or two chances ourselves. We have to learn from it.
“The big thing for me is that we have to try and control games. Just because we’re away from home you can’t start thinking, 'Well, start getting the ball forward and play from there,' it plays into their hands.”
Both of Corne’s goals were headers, with each supplied by a cross from Roarie Deacon, as the Stones reaped the reward of their consistent attacking pressure.
From both goals, City should have defended better, be it as individuals or as a unit.
“There were things that went on that I wasn’t happy with,” reflected Askey. “People (were) not recovering quick enough to get behind the ball.
“The ball in was a good ball and the lad (Corne) has made a good run, but the second goal is poor defending.
“Turning your back on the ball, I think he went past a couple of men, you can’t do that. That goal is poor from our point of view.”
