PICKERING Town picked up their first win under interim managerial pair Tony Hackworth and Ged Dalton as they beat Thornaby 2-1 at Mill Lane.

Hackworth and Dalton were placed in temporary charge at Pickering on Friday after the club parted company with manager Steve Roberts, who had been at the helm since January 2020.

The duo suffered a 5-0 defeat at Whitley Bay on Saturday but bounced back to edge past Thornaby, thanks to Harry Jessop’s brace.

Jessop put Town in front after just 10 minutes, finishing from 25 yards out from Rafael Ferreira’s pass, despite being surrounded by defenders.

The Tadcaster Albion dual registration striker doubled his side’s lead on the half-hour mark, latching onto a back-pass, dummying past a Thornaby man before finding the back of the net.

Jetta Fanara pulled one back for the visitors after a neat passing move before half time.

Little separated the two sides in the second half as Pickering managed to see out a vital win, which moves them from bottom of the Ebac Northern League division one up to 15th.

The Pikes travel to fourth-placed Carlisle City, who have lost just one of their opening nine league matches, on Saturday (3pm).

Meanwhile, Selby Town were knocked out of the League Cup in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League after a 4-1 defeat on penalties at home to Parkgate.

The away side went in front through Lewis O’Brien shortly inside the second period before Flynn McNaughton took the game to penalties, scoring in the 87th minute. Selby were unable to take advantage though from the spot-kicks.

The eight-placed Robins are back in league action on Saturday (3pm) at home to Brigg Town, who sit ninth.

Elsewhere, Tadcaster Albion begin their Isuzu FA Trophy campaign at the first qualifying round stage away to Macclesfield FC on Saturday (3pm).
