FORMER England and Great Britain international Jon Wilkin has tipped York City Knights Ladies to win a maiden Betfred Women’s Super League Grand Final on Sunday (3.30pm).
York face Leeds Rhinos at the Totally Wicked Stadium this weekend, seeking to add a first Grand Final title to the League Leaders’ Shield they claimed last month.
Although the Knights head into the showpiece event on the back of a BWSL double over Leeds, the Rhinos enter their fourth straight Grand Final while York are in their first.
However, ex-St Helens captain Wilkin is backing Lindsay Anfield’s side claim further silverware, saying: “I think that York are the favourites.
“I think what they’ve done has been incredible, they’re recruited really well and set the standard in the Women’s Super League this year.
“I think one of the real positives about the women’s game is how it’s been spread around – St Helens, Leeds and York are all capable of going on and winning the competition. I think that’s what is so exciting about the sport.
“I’m delighted to be in the studio and commentating on the game because every time I’ve done punditry on the women’s game, it’s entertained me no end and we’ve shown some really tight games on Sky Sports this year.
“We’re hoping that the Grand Final, between York and Leeds, delivers in the same way and I’m excited to see what happens.
“It’s going to close but I do fancy York. They’ve been so good all year and I just feel like it’s their year.”
