JOHN ASKEY believes that York City need to sign another forward but insisted that he will be selective over any new recruits.

York allowed summer signing Scott Boden to join Vanarama National League North side Buxton last week, freeing room in the budget to bring in more competition in the frontline.

Newly-promoted City have enjoyed a tremendous start to life back in the National League, sitting eighth after their first nine matches, but have struggled in front of goal.

To date, 10 goals have been managed, seeing the Minstermen rank as the joint-lowest scorers in the division's top 15, with second-from-bottom Scunthorpe United having bagged the same number.

Explaining Boden's departure, manager Askey said: “Buxton came in for Scott and I thought it was the right thing to do for the football club to free up that money and it’s a good move for Scott too. It worked well for all parties.

“I think we do need to bring in another forward. But it’s got to be the right one, (especially) looking at the clubs in this league and how much money they’re paying to get people in to score goals.

"We just want a striker, not necessarily a 20 or 30-goal-a-season one, but someone who can hold the ball up and bring others into play.

“If something happens to Lenny, then we’d miss him,” the boss said on captain Lenell John-Lewis, the club's top scorer with four goals.

Askey is seeking a forward with past experience at this level, rather than a prospect currently playing at Under-23s level.

“Bringing in a U23s player is quite difficult, especially if they’ve not been out on loan (before)," he said.

“The type of striker we want is probably not an U23s striker.

"We’ll keep looking, probably have one or two in (training) that we’ll have a look at. Hopefully one of those is the right one.

"You’re looking at someone who is not getting in at a (Football) League club higher up, who the club wants to get out and have some games and a player that wants to come in and play.

“That’s the market we’re looking at really.

"Even if we don’t (sign someone), we’ve still got more than enough to compete with every team we play against.”

Asked how the club were positioned financially to recruit, the manager laughed: "The board told me there’s millions to spare and I can get whoever I want.

“No, the reason that’s Scott’s gone is to free up a bit of money, because that’s the only way we can do something.”

York will be hoping to resolve their problems in front of goal tomorrow afternoon (3pm) at home to Notts County, who have lost just one of their opening nine fixtures and sit fourth.

"It’s going to be a really tough game," said Askey. “It’ll test us and hopefully we’re up to the test.

"We’ll have a better idea of where we fit after. All the players are looking forward to it, I am personally and I hope that the players do themselves justice.

“When they play in front of big crowds, they tend to do so, they’ve always performed, so hopefully that’ll be the case again.”

City are set to recall centre back Maxim Kouogun after he served his one-match suspension during last week's 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe.

The club continue to assess midfielder Mitch Hancox, who came off injured at Glanford Park, while Paddy McLaughlin, Michael Duckworth and Adam Crookes remain sidelined.
