PICKERING Town remain rooted to the foot of the Ebac Northern League division one following a narrow 1-0 defeat at title-chasers Ashington on Saturday.
It was a much-improved performance from Rudy Funk’s charges, who were bolstered by the return of Bermudian international Quinaceo Hunt between the sticks, with the Pikes undone by the only clear-cut chance of the game narrowly before the interval.
The game’s first opportunity came the way of the hosts on the 12-minute mark as Craig Spooner played in Lee Mason, but Hunt was out quickly to gather.
Spooner then scooped over from eight yards before firing a free kick over the bar as Ashington continued to dominate, though Keelan Grist forced Karl Dryden into a fantastic save as he looked to carve out an opening for Pickering.

But the all-important goal arrived in the 44th minute, referee Lewis Marriner playing advantage after a foul as Mason twisted past defenders in the box before unleashing an unstoppable strike that crashed off the underside of the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Hunt continued to prove a valuable return for the Pikes after the interval, first intercepting a promising Ashington team move, before getting down well to push away Jordan Summerly’s drive.
Pickering responded with the introductions of Kofi Appiah and Damian Giliga but remained under firm pressure from their opponents, who were determined to keep the pressure on Newton Aycliffe and Bishop Auckland in the race for promotion.
The Pikes’ blushes were again spared late on by the impressive Hunt, who produced the pick of the saves to touch over a Ben Sampson header, but the spirited performance was not enough to prevent them from falling to defeat.
Pickering are two points adrift of 19th placed Thornaby, who have a three-point deduction, ahead of their rearranged fixture at Tow Law Town this evening (7.45pm).
