YORK-born goalkeeper Rory Watson has sealed a move to Sky Bet League Two for the opening stages of the season.

The 27-year-old was released after a title-winning season with Wrexham, co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, but has now joined Doncaster Rovers after impressing on a trial spell through pre-season.

Watson was named as an unused substitute as the Dons progressed into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-1 victory over Sky Bet Championship side Hull City on Tuesday, where he emerged through the club’s youth ranks but never made an appearance.

The goalkeeper will wear the number 34 shirt during the length of his contract with Doncaster.

Prior to his time with the Vanarama National League champions, the goalkeeper made more than 100 appearances for Scunthorpe United.

Speaking on his side’s decision to sign Watson on a short-term contract, Rovers manager Grant McCann, who was appointed to the top job in May after a spell at Peterborough United, told the club: “We have had a mutual agreement with Rory since early on in pre-season since Louis Jones picked up his injury.

“He’ll continue to do that until Louis is fit again, which we hope will be in the next two to three weeks and Rory will bring his experience to the group.”

Watson could make his Doncaster debut at Newport County on Saturday (3pm).
