YORK-raised defender Charlie Cresswell scored his first international goal for England Under 21s last night - but could not prevent a rare defeat.
The Young Lions lost their first game in a year as they were beaten 3-2 by Ukraine in their latest European Championships qualifier.
Cresswell played the full 90 minutes, and looked to have secured a point for Lee Carsley's side after heading home a cross from Liverpool's Harvey Elliott with two minutes of normal time remaining.
But Ukraine had other ideas, sealing victory deep into added time to break England's hearts.
The current champions were left with it all to do in the second half, with Nazar Voloshyn and Oleh Ocheretko firing Ukraine into a 2-0 lead at the break in Slovakia.
Chelsea winger Noni Madueke then pulled a goal back before Cresswell levelled with a superb back-post header to level the scores.
However, Ukraine would have the last word, Illia Kvasnytsya firing past Burnley's James Trafford in the fourth minute of added time to consign England to a first defeat in over a year and only a second loss in 20 games.
The defeat is also England U21s first in an away European Championship qualifier in 12 years.
Cresswell has made six appearances for Leeds United this term, with the West Yorkshire club currently fifth in the Sky Bet Championship as they seek an immediate return to the Premier League.
