Local coach Matt Bridson has a clear love of squash, which can be sensed by every person he works with.
“Squash is such a fantastic game.”
He started playing the sport at the age of 12, as well as tennis, but started playing more often when he came to York to attend university.
Having not enjoyed his previous job, Matt felt that he needed something different.
Matt started coaching at York Squash club. After receiving multiple offers from different York based schools, he knew that it was his calling, his fate.
“I’m a great believer in fate.”
“When I started as a junior, I went in all shy and a bit nervous and everything, but they settled me down and gave me confidence to mix in with people so I’m just trying to do the same back with other people.”
He holds several different sessions to fit as many different needs as possible, including juniors, ladies and mixed abilities. “A lot of the groups I run have never played squash and don’t get a lot of chance to play sport, so we bring those groups in.”
Matt coaches the junior section, which runs weekly coaching sessions during term time, school holiday camps, junior mini leagues and junior team matches.
In the ladies’ section, he runs two weekly ladies only sessions on Monday evenings and Wednesday mornings. He runs a mixed ability session on Saturday mornings, which is open to all. Bounce back sessions are aimed at players who have had to take a break from squash for any reason, but now feel they would like to play again. Matt is there to encourage these players.
The bounce forward sessions are a project Matt feels very passionate about. These are open to all sessions and are aimed at anyone who wants to improve their mental health.
As well as these, Matt also runs private coaching sessions in either 1 to 1 or pairs. These are for all standards and ages.
York Squash Club is an incredibly welcoming environment, with a diverse group of people who are open to anyone who would like to have a go at the sport or start back up.
