SELBY Town ran riot in the second half to run away convincing 8-2 victors against Clay Cross Town at the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium.
An under-par opening 45 minutes saw the scores level at one apiece by the interval, but braces from Harrison Rowley, Tawheed Ahmed and Ned Dry after the break helped the hosts record their biggest win of the NCEL division one season.
Having scored 14 goals in their last 12 matches, Ryan Cooper’s side now sit a comfortable 12th.
One of just three matches across the division to survive the downpours after being moved to North Yorkshire, it had become evident before a ball had even been kicked that conditions would be tough, with the opening half duly lacking any real spark.
However, it was Selby who took the early initiative as Ahmed’s tame strike from the edge of the box bobbled its way past Ryan Hopkins to hand them the lead just after the quarter-hour.
They were soon pegged back however, as a delightful long-range strike saw the Millers on level terms before the 20-minute mark.
Harry Clapham found himself with a decent opportunity to send the Robins back in front shortly after, but proved unable to hit the target.
With conditions becoming increasingly difficult, a tactical battle ensued and Clay Cross themselves had an opportunity to take the lead five minutes from the break, yet Alfie Burnett proved equal to the thunderous strike that came his way.
Selby came out with something to prove, and it took all of eight minutes to kickstart their scoring spree when Dry converted from the penalty spot.
And he had his brace five minutes later after applying the finishing touch to a flowing team move.
On the hour, three became four when Rowley added his name to the scoresheet, but the hosts showed every sign that they were not done yet.
That proved true when Ahmed secured his brace two minutes later, seemingly putting the Robins out of sight.
However, more was to come for Town, Rowley scoring his second of the afternoon 13 minutes from time, moments before Clay Cross managed to record a consolation after seeing the ball bobble its way past Burnett.
With time ticking away and tiring legs becoming more and more evident, Liam Love scored his first for the Club four minutes from time.
Jubilant cheers then surrounded the Fairfax Plant Hire Stadium after Dan Davison bundled home his fourth league goal of the campaign to seal a comprehensive win for the Robins.
Selby return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Worsbrough Bridge Athletic (7:45pm).
