GARRY Plant has stepped down from his role as chairman of Tadcaster Albion after nine months in the role.

Plant arrived at the So Trak Stadium in the summer, having spent the previous 10 years with Harrogate Town.

First joining Town as a volunteer, he worked his way up to become the club’s Managing Director, during which time he oversaw their rise from the Vanarama National League North to Sky Bet League Two.

He was also heavily involved in the redevelopment of the Wetherby Road ground, now known as the EnviroVent Stadium, and in the establishment of both their youth development programme and Community Foundation.

Alongside his commitment to Tadcaster, Plant continued to manage two businesses in Ripon and Birmingham, with the club saying that they will miss his experience, drive and good nature.

During his time with the Brewers, he helped to negotiate the club through one of the wettest winters on record, which saw the club flooded on several occasions by the nearby River Wharfe.

“The club prides itself on running its accounts - we only spend what we have. It would be easy to run into overdraft, but that would be folly,” he told The Press after Tadcaster's fifth flood of the season in mid-January.

A club statement on Thursday read: “We regret to advise you that Garry Plant has stood down from his position as Club Chairman.

“Garry accepted our request for him to take the job in the summer recess, when he worked tirelessly to improve the club but always with a sense of reality.

“’This is real football and real life – we are in a week-to-week struggle to make ends meet and to safeguard football at Tadcaster Albion. We only spend what we have, we support local businesses where we are able and the club is here for the supporters without whom there is no club’.

“Garry – thanks for all your help. You will always be welcome at The So Trak Stadium.”

The club have confirmed that former chairman Andy Charlesworth will take over the reins in the immediate future.
