YORK star James Wilby will have the chance to bid for a second Olympic medal this summer after being named in Team GB’s Paris 2024 swimming squad.
Wilby was part of the 4x100m medley team who took silver home from Tokyo, helping the quartet into the final before being replaced by Adam Peaty.
The breaststroke ace is among the coaches’ discretionary picks in the 33-strong Paris-bound squad having missed the qualification cut-off times in his individual events at the recent British Championships.
Wilby won his sixth consecutive national 200m breaststroke title in London and finished runner-up behind Peaty in the 100m, just two-hundredths of a second outside the 59.45s qualification time.
Considerations for those given discretionary picks included potential relay medallists, relay cover for athletes with heavy schedules, performances at the 2024 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships and medical mitigations.
Wilby is one of nine Olympic medallists in a squad containing seven Olympic champions, with action in the pool getting underway on July 27 in the French capital.
Aquatics GB Performance Director Chris Spice said: "As well as 12 Olympic debutants across the pool and marathon programmes, we will have five three-time Olympians and the valuable experiences of so many who were part of a memorable Games in Tokyo.
“We cannot wait to see how this team comes together with the aim of swimming faster in the summer.
“We know each and every athlete can do that, and that would put us in a very good place in Paris, where we are relishing having packed crowds and plenty of British support roaring us on."
Wilby started his swimming journey at York City Baths Swimming Club and, on his Olympic debut in Tokyo, reached the final in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke, where he finished fifth and sixth respectively.
The Glasgow-born swimmer cut an emotional figure after the latter, tearing up as he paid tribute to the sacrifices made by his mum Fiona, an NHS nurse.
Team GB Chef de Mission Mark England said: “The strength and depth of our pool swimming team was evident to see at the recent Aquatics GB Swimming Championships.
“I have no doubt the thrilling races we saw at the British Championships last week will be equally close fought.
“We’re excited to watch them all compete against the best in the world.”
Three-time Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty will be the figurehead of a Team GB squad aiming to emulate their record-breaking feats at Tokyo 2020 in 2021.
Peaty said: “I’m thrilled to have made my third Olympic team.
“It’s always amazing to be part of Team GB, but with it being so close to home in Paris this summer, and us having more home fans there supporting us, it’s even more exciting.”
