LINDSAY ANFIELD found that York Valkyrie’s winning return to the LNER Community Stadium was ‘really pleasing’.
An impressive 44-4 triumph over Warrington Wolves ensured that the Valkyrie could enjoy their comeback to the LNER, after back-to-back away matches against Huddersfield Giants and St Helens, with a well-rounded performance in front of a home crowd.
Director of Rugby Anfield was particularly impressed with the performances of Eboni Partington and Manuqalo Komaitai, with the former bagging a 15-minute hattrick, whilst Fijian centre Komaitai secured a first two tries for the Valkyrie.
“Eboni’s great, she’s come into the squad this year and has cemented herself as a really consistent player now,” Anfield enthused.
“She’s a leader within the group, today a lot of our experience was kind of sidelined but she was in there and she performed it really well.
“Once we can get Koms into training more regularly, because she is still with the army down South, she’s being coming up for some sessions and to be able to be there on gameday is great.
“To be able to get more training into her and to spend more time with her, I’m sure that we will see her go from strength to strength.
“We had a good performance last week at Huddersfield and we knew that we had to back it up today.
“To be here in the stadium with the home fans, the music, and everything that goes with it and a great performance from the girls as well, it’s really pleasing.”
Anfield was also pleased with her players for overcoming frustrations throughout the match, whilst taking the time to credit a spirited effort from Warrington.
Anfield continued: “We are missing a few players out of our spine and we have missed that fluency in terms of how we’ve been playing.
“We’ve asked the girls to get the basics right, to carry hard over the advantage line, ruck wins in terms of attack and defence.
“We are starting to do that, we’re starting to get a bit more consistency. It was a little bit clunky at times and some players were getting frustrated, but to still put on that sort of performance today against a well-drilled Warrington side was really pleasing.
“Credit to Warrington, their a good side and they turn up for each other, but they are well-drilled so we had to stick to our process and what we know.
“We relied on that, in terms of keeping on turning up for each other, and we did that today.”
The Valkyrie Director of Rugby is also looking forward to a 34 day break from match action, with Anfield already plotting a higher intensity in training to ensure that her players remain sharp.
“I’m really looking forward to getting a bit of intensity back into training whilst not having games back-to-back.
“We’ve got five weeks now where the girls will be coming in three times a week, they’ve completely acknowledged that we can push harder in training and that we can become a bit more relentless with our effort.
“I’m sure that after that five week block, we will come out as a side.”
