FORMER York City defender Graham Potter is the early favourite to replace Gareth Southgate as the new England manager.

Potter, who made over 100 appearances for the Minstermen in the early part of the millennia, is at 13/8 to become the national team's new permanent manager, via Sky Bet.

England U21 boss Lee Carsley and Newcastle Untied's Eddie Howe are at 9/4 and 11/4 respectively, whilst Jurgen Klopp is also among the favourites at 12/1.

Southgate led the national team for over 100 matches and almost eight years, and announced his decision to step down in a statement released by the FA this morning, saying that it was time for a "new chapter".

His decision comes after England were beaten 2-1 in Sunday's Euro 2024 final by Spain, having now lost in the trophy-crowning match for the second successive tournament.

The 53-year-old has been perhaps the country's most successful manager since Sir Alf Ramsey, guiding them to two European Championship finals, a World Cup semi-final, and a World Cup quarter final during his tenure.

"As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all," he said.

"But it's time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday's final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager."

Football commentator and City fan Guy Mowbray thanked Southgate for the "phenomenal" job that he had done.

Posting on X, he said: "Thank you Gareth. Pride and hope restored. A phenomenal job done. Now for somebody to take the next steps - thanks to everything that's been put in place."

Potter, 49, scored five times in 114 appearances for City from 2000 to 2003, but has been out of a job since being sacked by Chelsea last April.

He was reportedly one of the highest-paid football managers in the world during his time at Stamford Bridge, and has since reportedly turned down the top job at Lyon, Ajax and the Swedish national team.
