Thousands of people tested their fashion senses as they enjoyed a day at York Races.

The weather this weekend (July 20/21) may be red hot, but last weekend it was mostly rain for the 65th John Smith’s Cup where more than £450,000 was on offer over the course of the day’s seven different races.

Racegoers came decked out in their best clothes and took to Knavesmire to enjoy a day of fun - despite the rain.

James Brennan, head of marketing and sponsorship at York Racecourse, said: “It was nice to see racegoers who were determined to enjoy the 65th John Smith’s Cup regardless of the weather. Whether it was those who brought a picnic (maybe with a thermos flask), or people who tested their Cheltenham Festival fashions on the Knavesmire.

“Those who follow the form may well have picked out Starlust as a winning favourite in the fastest race of the day, others who follow Peter Kay might have won a few pounds after the success of Ray Von in the final contest.

“Whether it was the hot pies or patisserie cakes both made on site, or the local ice cream (yes, some people continued to dream of summer), we hope they had a great afternoon.”

Tickets are still available for the remaining cups of the season and can be purchased through the Races website.
