YORK City are considering offering a contract to trialist Max McMillan.
Adam Hinshelwood has confirmed that he plans on sitting down with McMillan to discuss a potential contract, should co-owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla agree to finance the deal, with York’s squad already large.
McMillan has so far featured in both of York’s pre-season friendlies against Sheffield United and Whitby Town, which ended in a 2-1 defeat and a 2-1 victory, whilst training with the first-team too.
The winger began his career in the academy of Leeds United, before making the switch to Fleetwood Town in 2021.
Having been born in York, McMillan attended Joseph Rowntree School and featured for Haxby Town FC at junior level.
He would enjoy a short loan stint with Radcliffe in the Northern Premier League, netting one goal in three games, before departing the Cod Army upon the expiry of his contract.
McMillan would earn a move to Wigan Athletic, where has featured in their under-21’s for the past year, before being released upon the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.
Now a free agent, Hinshelwood is keen to offer McMillan a deal to stay at York.
“He’s done so much good stuff at the moment, so yes, it’s one to sit down with Matt and Julie-Anne and see where we are budget-wise,” Hinshelwood confirmed.
“We’ll see if there is scope to bring another player in, he’s a player I really like.
“He’s sharp and some of his movement was good today, he didn’t quite get that end ball or he’d make a good run in behind and it wasn’t quite hit into that space.
“I really like what I’m seeing from him, and we’ll be having discussions very soon.
“Only Max is the trialist that we know, I’m not sure if we can mention the others names.
“He’s the only one who has stayed, there might be scope for a couple of other trialists to come in for Saturday but I don’t think we’re a million miles away from what we need.
“It’s a case of speaking to the board and seeing where we are financially.”
Hinshelwood also provided an update on the futures of Levi Andoh, Olly Dyson and Thierry Latty-Fairweather, who all are yet to feature in pre-season, with the City boss confirming that the latter two have been told that they are not a part of his plans.
Hinshelwood admitted: “I like to be honest about where we are. Levi is coming back from injury, that’s why he’s not featured.
“He’s probably about two weeks from joining in fully, so that’s why he hasn’t featured.
“Thierry and Olly, we’ve had honest conversations with them as soon as the season finished, and I said that I would be bringing players in and didn’t see them as being part of my plans.
“That’s where we are with them, to be fair to the lads they have trained and worked really hard.
“I want to work with the group that I see can take the club forward, I try to be honest with them and tell them that, as soon as the season finished.
“I let them know that that would be the case, and you can see from players coming in in their positions, that’s the way I see it with the squad that we have here now, to take us forward.”
Hinshelwood also confirmed that City hadn’t escaped the Whitby Town friendly without casualty, with Ashley Nathaniel-George struggling with his groin.
However, Hinshelwood hopes that the winger will be recovered in time for Saturday’s pre-season friendly with Grimsby Town at the LNER Community Stadium (3pm).
“Ashley was feeling his groin a little bit, but I think it’s been a very heavy week.
“ You’ve got to take that into consideration as well, the lads have been putting some miles into their legs and I think it showed at times.
“With the little cameos for 30 minutes, I think the fitness did show towards the end and they’ve been working hard, so they will have gone into the game a bit leggy.
“I think it’s just a bit of fatigue from a tough week for Ashley, so I’m hoping that there is nothing too sinister and the group will be ready to go Saturday.”
