York City Football Club has apologised after its official social media page reposted a Tweet by far-right activist Tommy Robinson, saying it “does not in any circumstance” support him.
The club’s page on X (formerly Twitter) shared a post by the English Defence League founder ahead of his march in Trafalgar Square, London, today (Saturday, July 27) which is understood to have said: "We're setting up in Trafalgar Square for the biggest patriotic rally the UK has ever seen."
A York City spokesperson said the repost has been taken down and is being looked into “as a matter of urgency”.
“The club does not in any circumstance support Tommy Robinson, or make any political or otherwise statements that could cause offence to supporters,” they said in a statement on social media.
“The repost has since been taken down and we would like to apologise if this repost caused any offence to anybody.
“Please be assured we are looking into this as a matter of urgency.”
Thousands of people gathered in central London for the march and a counter-protest.
Around 1,000 police officers have been deployed to the streets of the capital to “keep the peace” amid opposing demonstrations today.
