Lukas Butfield is delighted to have been named York Boxing Club’s Boxer of the Year 2024, and is looking forward to even greater success once competitions resume in the Autumn.
A memorable year for Butfield has seen the youngster recognised for exemplary displays, which pleases Head Coach Billy Wilson.
"Lukas has had a fantastic run winning eight of his ten amateur bouts culminating in a gold medal at the Manchester Box Cup and a silver at the Ed Bilbey Box Cup," Wilson gushed.
"[He] defeated three national champions and a Ukrainian International in the quarter finals of the Haringey Box Cup.
"Excellent results for a boxer who only became a senior last Christmas. He’s also a good role model.
" First in the gym and last out, Lukas makes progress by listening, learning and applying.
"The boxing future is bright for this boy who also regularly helps younger boxers with their drills and sparring sessions passing on advice from what he’s learned through experience."
18-year-old Butfield was equally as pleased with his award, stating: "This was my third season boxing. I’ve been fortunate to have had the chance to box some of the best elite seniors here and abroad and have won 22 of my 33 bouts.
"I started boxing at fifteen to help improve my fitness for football and ended up loving boxing.
"I no longer play competitive football as I focus exclusively on boxing.
"I want nothing more than to box as a professional. I’m the first and only boxer in my family.
"Boxing has benefited me mentally and physically, it teaches discipline, respect, how to cope whether winning or losing.
"Boxers learn about the correct diet needed to stay physically fighting fit and how to control their emotions.
"This is why I’d encourage all children to take up boxing."
Butfield admires boxer Vasyl Lomachenko, including: "How he controls his opponents with his footwork and creates angles like no other boxer.
"My ambition is to carry on winning fights and make a name for myself in this wonderful sport."
A former student of Manor CE Academy, Butfield lives with his parents in Acomb and works in the York pub run by his family.
Like all potentially elite athletes he needs sponsorship to become more successful. "’m looking for sponsors as presently I’m relying on just my family. Potential sponsors can get in touch via email at lukas05butfield@gmail.com."
York Boxing Club is in Acomb at 132 Boroughbridge Road. There are daily classes from 5pm. and anyone wanting to train there should contact Billy Wilson via the Club’s Facebook page.
