YORK City were deserved winners after claiming a first victory of the season over Tamworth at the LNER Community Stadium.

The return to home soil was a celebratory one for York, who are in seventh position after two matches, with Adam Hinshelwood’s side producing a dominant display when welcoming Vanarama National League newcomers Tamworth to North Yorkshire.

A promising first-half saw the two sides head into the break goalless, before Ollie Pearce earned City their first penalty kick in 483 days.

Pearce himself stepped up and coolly slotted home into the bottom right corner.

And just one minute later, the Minstermen doubled their advantage as Billy Chadwick raced through one-on-one, before expertly chipping a strike over Tamworth goalkeeper Jas Singh.

Hinshelwood was delighted with the performance of his York side, and was impressed with the patience his squad showed after initially being frustrated by the Tamworth defence.

“It certainly was [a great afternoon]”, Hinshelwood enthused.

“I thought that we played some really good stuff in the first-half but probably just didn’t work the goalkeeper maybe as much as we could have, for all of our possession.

“When the game is like that, you’ve got to be patient, keep believing in what we’re doing and I’m really pleased that the players did that.

“It was probably a bit ironic that we didn’t get a penalty for all of last season and then we get one in the first home game today.

“We were really unlucky, Cal [Callum Howe] had a really good header that got blocked when I don’t think the guy knew much about it, but there were some really good performances on display today.

“For all of our good possession, I’m really chuffed that one of our warriors that we’re going to need for the season, got man-of-the-match.

“Just be patient, keep believing in what we’re doing, and to not lose our discipline because we showed it a bit towards the end, players were a bit here, there and everywhere.

“We’ve got to keep our shape and how we play and that will give us our rewards. It was important that the players did that, I’m so chuffed, they fully deserved to win 2-0 today.

“They were always going to turn up and try to make it difficult for us, and they did.

“In all of the time that we’re playing against a team that are dogged in their defensive display, the first goal was all important.

“It didn’t come for us when we got into some good areas, we couldn’t quite find the finish and we thought it was going to be one of those afternoons where you don’t quite take your chances.

“There might be times like that this season, we’ll have a lot of the ball, work it from side to side and create a lot of chances but might not finish them.

“At times we might even go a goal behind, but we’ve got to keep believing in what we’re doing.

“The intensity in our play was good and I think the subs had a good impact, we’ve got to keep everyone hungry and consistent on Tuesday night.”

Hinshelwood was impressed by the manner of goal in which Billy Chadwick scored, and dished out praise for the winger after making an important impact against the Lambs.

The City boss continued: “It was a really good goal, I think we got into some really good areas.

“The key to that was Ryan [Fallowfield] not just smashing it down the channel, that maybe we got into the habit of doing last season.

“I know it does get frustrating at times, but if we can be brave to make that pass like we did there, then it can give us overloads.

“I’m so chuffed for Bill, he gets really frustrated with himself does Bill but he’s one hell of a player.

“I’m delighted that he’s a part of our squad.

“Great composure in front of goal, that’s what Billy’s got.

“He’s a tremendous player when he’s in front of goal and he finishes really well, we’ve seen that a couple of times already in pre-season.

“I’m glad that he is starting the season with a goal, that will give him a huge upvote of confidence.

“He was disappointed when he came off last week, what’s got to happen is that he’s got to take his opportunity when it comes and keep working hard.

“There were a few times where maybe his touch let him down, but he’s getting into some good areas and is getting confident.”
