ADAM HINSHELWOOD berated his York City side after an alarming 2-0 defeat at the hands of Boston United.

Boston came to the LNER Community Stadium as the Vanarama National League newcomers, having failed to secure a win, and scoring just one goal in their opening four matches.

But after York wasted opportunities in the first-half, Boston took control with Jacob Hazel and Keaton Ward putting the nail in the coffin.

Manager Hinshelwood was extremely frustrated by the performance of his City side and felt that they displayed complacency on the ball, with the boss praising Boston for taking advantage of their downfall.

Hinshelwood also took the time to credit goalkeeper Harrison Male, admitting that he felt that if Male hadn’t of been on form, then the scoreline would’ve been more damaging to the Minstermen.

“I think 2-0 flattered us to be honest,” Hinshelwood admitted.

“Harrison has kept us in the game, we’ve come up against a team that were much better than us off-the-ball.

“We just didn’t show anywhere near enough quality today, I think I counted that with 25 minutes gone, eight passes had gone out of play. For me, that’s just a mental thing, my one pet peeve is complacency.

“That was a clear message that I said to the players, to try and not be complacent.

“No one is too good and there’s got to be a bit of that today, because we don’t misplace that many passes on a normal day.

“It’s really frustrating, you’ve got to take your hat off to Boston, I thought that their game plan was good and when you don’t take your chances, it looked even better. It was like a master plan that they did today, that they’ve spent ages on, but as good as they were, we’ve got to look at ourselves.

“We had too many chances and too many players that didn’t perform today.

“It’s a bang average start now.

“Eight points from five games is not good enough, it’s not the standard that we want to set.

“It’s a reality check and is hopefully a big slap across the face for one or two, to not be complacent.

“Our fans today have come out in numbers and we haven’t delivered, we didn’t deliver on Saturday and we haven’t delivered today.

“It was a bad weekend for us, I’m really disappointed with the performances in the last two games and we’ve got to go back to working hard.

“On the counter-attacks today we were just open every time, if you’ve got players that are going to give the ball away as cheaply as they did, especially for the second goal, they gave it away cheaply, let them come inside.

“If it wasn’t for Harrison, then it probably would have been three or four and a fair reflection of the game today.”

Hinshelwood was full of praise for Male and for his goalkeeping display, after keeping Boston at bay for a lot of the contest.

The boss was impressed by his shot-stopping ability and felt that the goalkeeper was the only player who could hold his head high after a eye-opening defeat to Boston.

Hinshelwood enthused: “He’s come back in and has done what he’s done for us, I thought he was excellent and made some unbelievable saves.

“He was good on the ball, a few of his longer passes we could maybe tidy up on, but other than that he’s the one player that can come out today with any credit.

“We’ve made five changes and it looks like we’ve picked the same team for all of the games.

“There was no quality, we looked tired mentally, and the worse kind of football for me is when you have loads of the ball and do nothing with it.

“That’s happened today, a really bad performance, a really bad day and one where we know we need to be better.”

The York manager also vented his frustrations on players not following his set out game plan, which he felt was a big reason why the players struggled.

Hinshelwood spoke on the introduction of Marvin Armstrong, who appeared to play in a deeper role, despite the boss admitting that that wasn’t the instructions he had set out.

“I just wanted his energy around the park, but he came on and tried to play deep and dictate it.

“It’s not where you need him, the message is to stick to the game plan, not to just go up and do what you want to do.

“When you’re behind, you stick to the game plan, trust what we’re doing and there were too many lacklustre performances today.

“You can’t afford to have an off day in this league or you’ll be punished, and that’s what’s happened.”
