DOMINANT Leeds United cruised to their first Championship win of the season by outclassing Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.

Goals by Brenden Aaronson and Dan James secured a 2-0 victory with the scoreline reflecting a fine all-round display.

“It was definitely our best performance of the season – almost the perfect away performance,” said delighted Leeds boss Daniel Farke.

“More or less from the start we were able to dominate this game. We were brave and dominant.

“The goals we scored were fantastic and can go in the album. Overall it was a very dominant performance and the game management saw them rarely have the ball.”

Aaronson, making his first league start for United since April 2023 got the visitors up and running in the 24th minute.

Wednesday were torn apart by a rapid flowing move which started in Leeds’ right-back position.

It ended with a clinical finish by Aaronson who neatly manoeuvred the ball onto his left foot before slotting in his second goal of the season.

The American’s effort justified Farke’s decision to start him in the playmaker role ahead of Joel Piroe.

From that point onwards Leeds took control with smart possession football with Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev dictating midfield matters while centre-backs Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon ensured that goalkeeper Illan Meslier had little to do.

Willie Gnonto was an attacking threat throughout while Junior Firpo and Jayden Bogle got forward at will as Danny Rohl’s side struggled to contain the yellow-shirted visitors.

Of Gnonto his manager said: “At times he was unplayable. He can be a bit smarter but it was a really good performance and what we expect from him.”

The match was effectively done and dusted three minutes after the interval when Junior Firpo won the ball on the edge of the box enabling the impressive Mateo Joseph spearing a 30-yard pass through to James. The Welshman scorched past his marker Max Lowe before cheekily chipping the ball over James Beadle.

The Owls keeper made fine saves from Joseph and James to prevent Leeds pulling further ahead while Spanish Under-21's striker Joseph missed out on a goal his performance deserve when he fired over.

Leeds will need to keep the youngster wrapped in cotton wool as fellow striker Patrick Bamford will be out of action for a couple of weeks because of a hamstring injury.

Farke said: “Patrick is important to Joseph as he helps him improve the striker. We want him back sooner rather than later.”

The result and display certainly lifted the mood among Elland Road watchers and must have impressed new signing Largie Ramazani who watched from the stands.

The winger, signed for a fee of around £10m from Spanish La Liga side UD Almeria has signed a four-year deal.

While United’s senior side were strutting their stuff in South Yorkshire their Under-21s opened their home campaign at York’s LNER Community Stadium with a 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, Luca Thomas netting for the Whites from the spot.
