ADAM HINSHELWOOD has been impressed by the response that his York City side provided to their first defeat of the Vanarama National League season.

York had managed to avoid a loss in their opening four matches of the National League season, but ended their Bank Holiday weekend with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Boston United.

Hinshelwood had expressed his dismay at the City performance in the post-match press conference, but has been impressed by the response his players have shown when returning to training in midweek.

“They have done brilliant, like I knew they would,” Hinshelwood enthused.

“We have got a good group who are together, the defeats hurt even more.

“They will take it on the chin and we’ll learn from it, they’re no different.

“They’re obviously disappointed, especially as they love playing in front of that big crowd, and they will want to experience that a few more times at home.

“We as a team will learn more when we lose and will get better from it hopefully.

“Myself included, we just didn’t quite deliver on the day, when we got the ball into good areas it didn’t quite click and like I’ve openly admitted, I got a few of the changes wrong.

“There is lots for us to learn from and work on, and the players are no different, they want to learn from it as well.

“I’m disappointed that we didn’t get the result that we wanted to, especially in front of a big crowd.

“We tried and we played some good stuff at times in the first-half, but just couldn’t quite get the goal, and there are elements of our game that we need to improve on after watching the game back.

“We’re keen to try and put that right.

“It’s a tight and tough league, we’ve played five very good teams now and have been on the right end of a couple of those results.”

Hinshelwood believes that he has identified which improvements need to be made to his City side to avoid a similar performance against Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday (3pm).

The boss also explained that he hasn’t made any changes to his usual analytical breakdown on the players compared to what he would after a win, as he is keen to maintain consistency.

Hinshelwood explained: “There’s still room to improve for us, we’re going to work hard to put things right with what we didn’t quite do on Monday, to put them right this weekend.

“It’s important to learn from it, each game you learn from. I will analyse a game a little bit more and, rightly or wrongly, see what we can do better.

“We try to keep it the same and be consistent, whether we win or lose, there is a message from each game.

“Sometimes there are some good stuff or sometimes there are some stuff to work on.

“I like to analyse each game and learn from it, and Monday was no different, the analysis would have been a little bit longer with the video, but there were some good stuff in there to show the lads as well, it’s not all downbeat.

“We got the ball into some good crossing areas but we just didn’t quite capitalise on those, on the day, we didn’t have the quality when we got the ball in the final third. “

Hinshelwood would go on to partly take responsibility for the performance, admitting that he had made a mistake with the substitutions he opted to make.

“Bringing Dips [Dipo Akinyemi] and Len [Lenell John-Lewis] on at the same time probably wasn’t the best decision in hindsight.

“Like I say, by no stretch of the imagination do I think that I have all of the answers, I’m still young, I’m still learning and I learnt a lot from that game.”
