JACK Hinshelwood, son of York City boss Adam, has received his maiden call up to England's Under 21s squad ahead of their September internationals.

Ben Futcher's side will travel to Northern Ireland for their UEFA Euro U21 qualifier on September 6 before taking on Austria at Luton's Kenilworth Road on September 9.

19-year-old Hinshelwood has played every minute of Brighton & Hove Albion's two Premier League matches so far this season, a 3-0 victory at Everton and a 2-1 home win against Manchester United.

Following in the footsteps of his father - a Seagulls club centurion - the full-back progressed through the club's academy, and in April penned a new long-term contract after making 23 appearances across all competitions in a breakthrough 2023/24 season.

He scored against London sides Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford before a foot injury sustained in February kept him sidelined for the remainder of the campaign.

Hinshelwood has represented his country at Under 18 and Under 19 level, but now joins Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson and Ipswich Town forward Omari Hutchinson in receiving a first call-up to the Under 21s.

He could line up in England's back line alongside York-born Charlie Cresswell, who retains his place in the 24-man squad.

The son of former City and Tadcaster Albion striker Richard, Cresswell joined Toulouse this summer for an undisclosed fee after having struggled for game time with Leeds United last season.

Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is also included after having been a part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final in Germany.

Speaking about the camp, Futcher said: “Personally, it will obviously be a huge honour to lead out the MU21s for the first time.

“It's great to see Lee [Carsley] making the step-up to the senior side after being so successful with the MU21s. For me, it has been a great experience to work with the Elite League Squad over the past year, and now it's brilliant to have the opportunity to bring together a very talented group of players who can see a very direct link between all the pathway teams.

“We're not going to try and reinvent things and it will be very much a case of trying to continue the work that Lee and his staff have done with this age group.

“Our main job is to get the best out of a really talented group.”

England currently sit second in their qualifying group behind Ukraine, but having played one match more.

After overcoming Northern Ireland 3-0 at Goodison Park last November, their most recent outing resulted in a 7-0 rout of Luxembourg in Bolton in March.
