ADAM HINSHELWOOD hailed an ‘excellent’ performance from his York City side in their 2-0 victory over Wealdstone.
The York boss had warned him players pre-match to not underestimate Wealdstone despite their shaky start, but was delighted with an early moment of solo excellence from Ashley Nathaniel-George, producing a pinpoint finish to put City ahead early on.
Ollie Pearce doubled the advantage early into the second-half when pouncing onto a loose ball before coolly slotting past Archie Matthews, with the Minstermen moving into fourth position as a result.
The performance was pleasing for Hinshelwood, who was equally as impressed by the goals scored by his side, as well as how the club have conducted themselves on and off-of-the-field in recent times.
“I thought that the performance was excellent,” Hinshelwood enthused.
“To come away from home, and like I said to you guys a few days ago, it’s a tough place to come, they are a good side.
“They were trying to get a bit of momentum in their season after going undefeated for three games, so for us to come and play that well away from home, I’m really delighted with the clean sheet.
“I put my neck on the line there by changing the goalkeeper, because Harrison [Male] has done so well, but honestly they push each other so hard do the two goalkeepers.
“I said at the start of the season to them both that I would rotate them, so I’m just delighted that Rory [Watson] has gotten his clean sheet.
“If we’re being ultra critical, we’re not going to get as many chances as this when playing away from home.
“We’ve got to be a bit more clinical at times, Malachi [Fagan-Walcott] had a great header, Cal [Callum Howe] hit the top of the bar, Ty’s [Tyrese Sinclair] gone through and Callum Harriott there, it was great to see him on, but he could have also scored a couple of goals as well.
“We definitely created some chances, which is good, but if we’re being ultra critical then that end product still needs a little bit of work.
“There some really good performances, even Malachi when he came on won some really big headers and defended well.
“The togetherness that the team has got and the group has got, I’m glad that we’re starting to show that on the pitch.
“It was really nice to go to a hotel and one of their staff complimented all of the lads and the team on how polite and respectful they were.
“I’m glad that that togetherness is coming out on the pitch.”
Hinshelwood went on to discuss the strikes from Nathaniel-George and Pearce that secured an important three points for York, on their third trip into the capital for a third successive Saturday.
“It was an unbelievable strike, I’m hoping that we got a little taste of what Ashley is about today.
“And Ty, on the other side, I thought that he made some great runs but didn’t quite execute his finish at the end of it.
“That’s what we want, it’s something to bring to our play with the guile and the pace that those two have got.
“They’re really tough to play against, and I just hope that Ash got some confidence from today’s game, because he was excellent.
“He [Pearce] works hard and was disappointed that he didn’t start the other day, but what a response.
“He’s a really clever player and links up play really well for us, he makes some intelligent runs in behind and is calm when he gets it.
“Again, that’s three goals from him and he’ll get better and gain a lot of confidence from it.”
The York manager provided an update on Darragh O’Connor, who was an unfortunate casualty of the win, and is expected to now go for a scan.
Hinshelwood also explained the absences of both Cameron John and Dipo Akinyemi, who he hopes will be back involved for Tuesday night’s return to the LNER Community Stadium against Braintree Town (7.45pm).
The boss continued: “I think he [O’Connor] just felt a pop in his quad, which is disappointing for him.
“We’re probably going to need a scan to see the extent of damage on that one, but we’re hoping it’s nothing too sinister.
“Cam John was a bit stiff with tight hips.
“We couldn’t risk him today, but hopefully he’s okay for Tuesday.
“Dipo was just a bit of illness overnight.
“We tried to keep him away from the players as much as we could, but again we will have to see how he is tomorrow.
“Hopefully he will be okay to train on Monday and be back in again on Tuesday.”
