ADAM HINSHELWOOD was ‘disappointed’ with the performance of his York City players, despite a 2-1 victory over Braintree Town.
York welcomed a resilient Braintree side that had endured three 0-0 draws prior to their visit to North Yorkshire, with Hinshelwood admitting pre-match that he was anticipating a tough clash against the Vanarama National League newcomers.
It proved to be the case early on, as George Langston’s cross picked out an unmarked Frankie Terry at the back post, who headed the Iron in front with just four minutes played.
City quickly responded through Ricky Aguiar with a timely half-volley that beat Lucas Conovan.
With just three minutes remaining of the first-half, the Minstermen scored what would be the winning goal, as Ashley Nathaniel-George tucked home Ollie Pearce’s pass at the back post.
Despite the result and three points, which sent York into fourth and level on points with the league leaders, Hinshelwood admitted that he was disappointed, as he felt that the standards they have set hadn’t of been matched.
“I’m a little bit disappointed, if I’m being honest,” Hinshelwood confessed.
“We’ve won three games on the bounce and had a come from behind victory tonight, but it feels like we lost the game if I am honest.
“I don’t know why that is, it’s just the standard and the expectation that we have set maybe over the last few weeks.
“I suppose that’s a good thing.
“I think we maybe are going to get games like this, where it is going to be frustrating.
“I probably got as frustrated as everyone watching it really.
“I can’t really put my finger on it, we’ll analyse it and do what we do, I suppose that we’ve come a long way if I’m disappointed in winning games here.
“It’s a long way from where we were.”
Despite his frustration, Hinshelwood was pleased with the response his players provided to falling behind so early, as well as turning the match around from a losing position.
The York boss was not happy however with the goal that Braintree scored, labelling Terry’s header as a ‘soft one’ to concede.
Hinshelwood commended: “Full credit to the team and the players out there, they really responded well.
“Rick’s got another goal, he’s scored a lot of goals from midfield and can add that to the team.
“We really worked the goals, Ash at the far post, I’m really grateful to see that drop in at the end.
“It was a different one to his goal from Saturday but it is back-to-back goals for him now, so hopefully he can get enormous confidence from it.
“They are a really tough team to play against, I think that the proof is in the pudding with the last few results that they have had.
“They haven’t conceded many goals, and I think that we created enough chances for it to be a bit more, but we had to keep going and stay concentrated.
“All in all, happy with three points.
“It was a soft one. We’ve dealt with the first ball and then have switched off for the second phase, everyone has come rushing out and have not picked up their players.
“It’s a really disappointing one, it’s another goal that, probably won’t go down as a set-piece, but it’s come down from that position again.
“I’m really disappointed with that, it would have been nice to keep another clean sheet.
The three points boosted York into fourth position and level on points with Gateshead, Forest Green Rovers and Rochdale at the summit of the National League table, after managing 17 points from their opening eight matches.
Hinshelwood reacted to the news, and provided an update on Dipo Akinyemi, who was not involved again for City after missing the trip to Wealdstone at the weekend through illness.
Responding to going joint top, Hinshelwood stated: “Really? Blimey.
“I don’t know what to make of that to be honest, I suppose we have got to be really pleased but we set high standards for ourselves and the team.
“We want to be better for Saturday.
“He’s ready to go, I just thought that with the forward players, I didn’t want to change it too much, only one change was defensively with Cam John coming onto the bench for Darragh [O’Connor] because of his injury.
“He’s got to be patient for his opportunity, the forward players are doing a good job and we’ve got lots of options on the bench as well.”
