Tadcaster Albion were close to escaping defeat at home to newly -promoted Parkgate, scoring twice in the second-half after the away side took a 3-0 first-half lead, as centre back Conor Qualter made his return to the club and new signing Ethan Kachosa made an instant impact off the bench.
Both sides started the match eager to get on the ball and create attacking chances, Tadcaster opting for a high press from minute one.
It took Parkgate 11 minutes to threaten their opponents’ penalty area; wing-back Harry Day connected with a free kick from Sam Eckhart, roughly 30-yards from goal, yet couldn’t direct his effort goalwards.
Against the run of play, Parkgate took the lead six minutes later when goalkeeper Sam Green misplaced a pass into the midfield.
From 40-yards out, striker Jamie Austin executed an audacious long range effort that nestled into the bottom right from level with the away bench.
The Brewers were soon the masters of their own dismay once more as another loose pass gifted Parkgate the ball deep in their own half. Austin’s strike partner Ross Duggan collected the ball on the edge of the box, cut inside and fired low into the bottom right. Tadcaster were not comfortable on the ball.
Parkgate were keen for more and took initiative by playing with a much higher defensive line, before being rewarded with just over 10 minutes left in the first half as Tadcaster conceded possession again to the Steelmen inside their own half of the pitch.
Duggan ran at centre backs Knowles and Qualter before unleashing a fierce shot that was well blocked, only for Harley Moore to ward off Knowles looking to clear the ball which allowed Duggan to score at the second time of asking.
Tadcaster ended the half on a high as Albert Ibrahimi earned a corner on the left. Greenway’s corner looped in towards Qualter, who headed into an empty net after keeper Jordan Greaves came off his line to punch yet was beaten to the ball.
Mick O’Connell made two changes in Andrew Shepherd and new signing Kachosa.
Starting the second-half much brighter, Ben Tweed set the tone for the half with a mazy 50-yard run on the left from inside his own half, reaching the byline with a few step-overs before his cross was punched clear.
Greenway found himself in possession in the left channel before the ball was worked quickly to Sam Kitchen and then Kachosa, who darted inside from the right with pace and hit a powerful shot that Greaves tipped over acrobatically for his first real test of the match.
The best move of the game saw Sam Kitchen collect a throw-in from skipper Charlie Owen.
A pass with the outside of his boot found Ibrahimi with his back to goal. Moved to Kachosa on the right, the versatile wide defender and winger clipped the ball into the box for Tweed to attempt a diving header at the back post which was inches wide of a second goal.
Parkgate found more space going forward as Tadcaster committed more men to their attacks.
From a free kick that was cleared, a succession of quick passes ended with the Steelmen’s new signing Louis Afonso-Ferreira sprinting in behind on the right.
His low cross into Duggan was dealt with as Green came off his line, but he missed the second challenge following the loose ball out to the left as it arrived at the feet of Harley Moore. Fortunately for Green, Moore’s chip sailed over the crossbar.
Tadcaster hauled themselves back into the game when Kitchen found space in behind Parkgate’s midfield. He found substitute Hardcastle, who then moved it on to Kachosa on the left.
The away side refused to clear the bouncing ball from the cross into the box, which Tweed stabbed home after arriving late to the attack. Game on.
Tadcaster were denied late on in the game as substitute Alex Charlesworth received a knock back from midfield and delivered a looping early cross from the right.
Tweed’s glancing header landed at the feet of Kachosa at the back post, who finished tidily into the bottom right only for the offside flag to halt the celebrations.
Playing as a second striker for the game’s final moments, Qualter threatened the Parkgate goal for the final time as his looping header connecting with Ibrahimi’s direct ball in from the left channel was just shy of the crossbar.
Parkgate survived the late scare to take all three points back to Rotherham.
The Brewers are back in action this Saturday away to Penistone Church (3pm).
