MICHAEL DOYLE labelled York City as the ‘best team in the league’ after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Woking.

York battled back after Dan Moss had opened the scoring in the second-half, as Dion Kelly-Evans was adjudged to have handled the ball in his own area, forcing the referee to point to the spot.

Lenell John-Lewis stepped up to continue his early goalscoring record for City, sweeping the ball into Will Jaaskelainen’s bottom right corner.

Manager Adam Hinshelwood had expressed his frustration after the match, as York’s unbeaten run stretched to eight, but City were unable to find the finishing touch for three points in their third draw from their last four matches.

However, Woking boss Doyle was very complimentary of their opposing National League club, describing York as an ‘outstanding team’ and labelling the Minstermen as ‘the best team in the league’ in his post-match interview.

Speaking to the Vanarama National League social media team, Doyle effused: “All credit to York to be fair, I think that they are an outstanding team.

“I looked at their players before they scored and I was a bit annoyed, you think that if you can do it against the best team in the league that were on for their fifth clean sheet, so to concede from a penalty is really disappointing.

“Again, I’ve not seen it back but I am led to believe that Dion is pushed in the back and his arm has come out and it has hit his hand.

“When we don’t get the one in the first-half, these are the big decisions and you don’t want to come away talking about the big decisions because it has cost us.

“We’ve got to look at the positives from our players now so that we can kick on from that.”

Doyle was also impressed by the performance of his Woking squad and believes they gave a ‘great account of themselves’ in front of the television cameras.

The Cardinals’ boss credited the performance of his goalkeeper, Jaaskelainen, and hopes to build consistency after a point against one of the early pacesetters.

“I’m really happy with the performance today from everybody, to a man, they gave a great account of themselves,” Doyle commended.

“Last week we were really questioned as a team and as players, I thought that we were quite flat last week in a big game.

“Today I could not have asked for anymore from anybody, I thought that we were really unfortunate to not see the game out, I thought that we had three points in the bag.

“We could have had a penalty in the first-half and, don’t get me wrong, they had their chances.

“I thought that Willy Jaaskelainen was outstanding with some of the saves he pulled off.

“I thought that we had done enough to win it and it wasn’t to be, it is what it is.

“We’ve certainly got to build on that and get some consistency into our game.”
