Selby Town fell to a disappointing 2-1 defeat at home to lowly Worsborough Bridge on Saturday at a sunny Richard Street.

Hosts Selby would have surely expected to come away with all three points from a team just one place above the bottom place in the NCEL division one, especially after their performance in midweek against then-top of the table Wombwell Town.

Town had performed superbly in that game and were leading 2 nil until the 78th minute abandonment.

As a result of injuries and suspensions, the Robins were a little under strength for the game with Charlie Petch, Matty Dawes, and Dan Davison suspended.

Harry Clapham was ruled out with injury and Harrison Rowley has moved clubs.

Therefore, Harrison Whiteley made his first start for the club, Jason St Juste came back into the starting line-up and Declan Racher also returned.

After a few weeks out injured Ned Dry made a welcome return on the substitute bench.

The visitors looked dangerous from the off and the experienced Connor Glavin saw a free-kick blocked.

From a corner, another chance was headed over the bar and then an effort from the right whistled past the far post of Liam Wilson's goal and the Selby defence seemed to dither before clearing another chance.

Town were looking lacklustre and it was no surprise when the visitors took the lead on 28 minutes.

Poor defending allowed a ball to be played into the home penalty area and Josh Brown turned sharply to knock it past Wilson.

Town were trying to come back with a shot that was charged down and then a great cross from the right found Liam Love, but he could not adjust his feet to get anything on the ball.

The visitors opened well at the start of the second half with Glavin firing an effort over the bar and then Brown shot inches past the far post.

However, Selby were becoming stronger and a great ball in from the left saw Tom Parkinson knock the ball agonisingly wide of the post.

Town equalised in the 64th minute when Troy Greening swept the ball home after superb work from Caden Mcgrath on the right.

The Robins created good chances from this point with Whiteley having a shot blocked and then Juninho Blake cleared well as Love looked well-placed.

Despite the half chances, the game was over for Selby after 75 minutes when again some poor defending saw the ball worked to Glavin, 10-yards from goal, and his shot looked to take a deflection before beating Wilson for a second goal for the visitors.

Town could not come back and in fact Hayley Holt should have put the game to bed in the 90th minute but blazed the ball over the bar with only Wilson to beat.
