SELBY Town made hard work of beating second bottom Appleby Froddingham in the NCEL fixture at Richard Street on Tuesday evening.

A brace from Harry Clapham and an unusual effort from Matty Dawes sealed the points after the visitors had led for a long period of the game.

In fairness, and with better finishing in front of goal, either of the sides could have claimed the points, and the home side were glad to hear the final whistle.

It appeared that it was going to be a good night for Town when Clapham opened the scoring in the first minute when new signing Finlay Wade surged into the visitors penalty area and his pinpoint pass found the Town captain who swept the ball home.

Dan Davison should have made it two minutes later when he fired high over the bar from six-yards, with only goalkeeper Jordan Quibell to beat.

Town were shocked on five minutes when the visitors equalised with a soft goal.

The ball was played into the Selby area and appeared to hit Alex Marsh on the head before rolling across the goal line.

The Robins were making good progress down the right of the pitch and Quibell made a great save in pushing a Jamie Danby shot around a post.

Caden McGrath shot over the bar and a headed effort from a corner kick was cleared off the line.

Appleby were not making much headway with only Kadey Philips having a shot that Liam Wilson claimed at the second attempt.

However, Philips put his side in front seven minutes before the break with a great shot from 25-yards that curled away from Wilson high into the net.

Just after this, Town came very close when only the combined effort of Quibell and a defender kept the ball out of the net.

Heavy rain greeted the players to the new half and Appleby had two chances early on.

Firstly, a visiting attacker bore down on Wilson who did well to get something on the ball  and divert it for a corner.

Seconds later there was another great chance when Joel Chapman fired across goal again with only Wilson to beat.

(Image: Harvey Brewster) Selby had a great chance to equalise on 57 minutes when  the referee awarded them a dubious penalty. Up stepped Clapham but Quibell dived to his right to save.

Town went close again with a McGrath shot that went just over the bar and they managed to draw level on 77 minutes when Dawes tried his luck from 30-yards with the ball deflecting off a knee, which saw it loop up and over Quibell into the net.

It got even better a minute later when a McGrath cross from the right was nodded home by Clapham for what proved to be the winning goal.

Just before the end McGrath shot inches wide of the far post and Davison once again, from only yards out, managed to hit the ball over the bar and out of the ground.
