Selby Town visited Armthorpe Welfare in a NCEL clash on Saturday and they came away with all three points in a scrappy encounter.

Flowing football was sparse in a game spoiled by a nasty crosswind over the pitch. The game kicked off in lovely sunshine but the last 15 minutes saw torrential rain sending the 50 or so Town supporters in a crowd of 134 scurrying for cover.

Harry Clapham put Town in front just before the interval but the home side equalised midway through the second-half, before James Danby sealed the game for Town late on.

In relation to team news Charlie Petch returned to the team after suspension and Tom Parkinson came back in with Troy Greening and Alex Marsh dropping to the the bench.

In the early stages, Danby looked to be through on goal but was muscled off the ball by a defender.

Tom Parkinson saw himself through on goal but he saw his shot go wide and then Matt Dawes saw an effort claimed by home goalkeeper Ralph Smethurst.

Armthorpe then came close when a deep corner was headed just wide as the Town defenders struggled to clear.

Town thought that they had taken the lead on 22 minutes when a Dawes cross in from the right was headed in by Parkinson, only for the flag to go up for offside.

The home team were trying to get into the game and an effort was scooped over the bar.

A couple of minutes before the break, Selby took the lead after some intricate play on the right with the ball finding Clapham who knocked it past Smethurst from eight-yards.

The home side started the second period strongly with a shot going inches over the bar.

However, the Robins were showing good pressure. Ned Dry, on for Parkinson, laid off a good ball for Clapham whose shot was inches over the bar.

Smethurst soon made a great block as an effort from Clapham looked to extend Town’s lead.

The goalkeeper then made a superb save from a Dry free-kick at the edge of the penalty area, as Clapham had been fouled.

Liam Wilson was called into action with two great saves, firstly pushing a header away at point blank range and then flying to his left to save a goal bound effort.

However, on 75 minutes the Town custodian could do nothing as Harry Charlotte beat him from six-yards.

Wilson was forced into another save just after this and then Town sealed the points seven minutes from time.

Great work on the right from Caden McGrath and Alex Marsh saw the latter cross the ball and Danby headed strongly past Smethurst.

Selby defended the last minutes well and the home side only had one last chance that Wilson fielded at his near post.
