YORK City supporter Morgan Bruce previews the Minstermen's upcoming match with Wycombe Wanderers.

The Emirates FA Cup has always been a special competition for York City.

As a club, Adam Hinshelwood gets the chance to write another chapter in the Minstermen’s FA Cup story as legends such as Keith Houchen have done in the past.

The task he’s been set isn’t an easy one, however. That’s what makes the FA Cup special for football fans across the country. This weekend we see the FA Cup hit the first round where non-league meets the football league for the first time this season.

York City are one of the non-league teams that get the opportunity to test themselves against football league opposition this weekend as they face the long trip South to current Sky Bet League One title chasers Wycombe Wanderers.

While York have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2024/25 season, as they find themselves top of the Vanarama National League heading into this FA Cup weekend, their opponents have started almost equally well as they find themselves in second place in League One.

Wycombe are only trailing former Premier League side Birmingham City in the league. However, this comes as no surprise.

The Blues had an American consortium led by Tom Wagner at the Shelby Companies Ltd, purchase a controlling stake of 45.96% in the club in 2023, and despite a rocky start to their involvement in the club, are now looking to right those wrongs by securing immediate promotion back to the second tier.

Therefore for the Chairboys to be the team directly behind them in the league is an impressive start to the campaign and one that they will be looking to build upon.

What will make the match-up between Bloomfield’s Wycombe side and Hinshelwood’s York side more intriguing is how York’s away form matches up against Wycombe’s home form.

York are unbeaten away from home having only conceded five goals in eight away games, as they’ve won four and drawn four.

The most recent of those wins came in dramatic fashion against Halifax where the Minstermen were trailing 1-0 heading into the 90th minute but were able to miraculously come from behind and win the game with two late goals from set pieces.

That win showed how much fight this York team have, which could be crucial this weekend.

Wycombe on the other hand are not unbeaten at home this season.

However, their one loss came against the aforementioned Birmingham in only the second game of the season.

They have been untouchable in League One since that game including winning their last four in a row, which will give them a lot of confidence for the weekend.

Both sides will be looking to advance further into the competition than last year as they were both eliminated in the first round by Wigan and Walsall respectively, especially as last season Wycombe lost to opposition from a lower division so will be looking to be more wary of that this year.
