ADAM HINSHELWOOD reacted to York City's best-ever start to a season.
York’s start to the season has been incredible, and as per York City South, no team in the history of the football club has ever amassed a 41 points tally after 19 matches.
City's start to the campaign has been their best in their 102 year history, even better than the York squad that broke past the 100 point barrier in the 1983/84 season.
It’s a statistic that Hinshelwood was in awe of, but the City boss refused to rest on any laurels, insisting that his current team could still become even stronger.
“That’s a team that’s hit 100 points in a season as well!" Hinshelwood told BBC York.
“I didn’t know that myself. Football can change so quickly, we want to keep on improving and we don’t want this to be the best version of us in November, we want to keep improving on it.
“It’s easier said than done, but that’s our challenge.
“We want to really improve on last season, and as soon as we have done that we want to move onto the next challenge.
“We’re definitely enjoying being where we are in the table and being up there and challenging, we’ll be doing all that we can to try and stay there.
“I know how quickly it can change. I’ve been in football a long time and have been managing for a relatively long time as well, you know that it can change so quickly so you do have to just stay on it.
“You can’t take your foot off of the gas or get too excited.
“I’m sure that people always say that you shouldn’t get too high or too low, but I get ridiculously high when we win and ridiculously low when we lose, and I don’t think that’s ever going to change.
“Ultimately, you want to just focus on the next game and that’s all I’ve done.
“We try to improve on the last game and be better in the next game, that’s all I’ve continued to try and do.”
A statistic of that calibre seems almost unimaginable after York's last visit to Altrincham, in which they were hammered 6-1 in March.
City were on the search for a first win under manager Hinshelwood after he had replaced Neal Ardley, with City lingering dangerously inside the National League relegation zone.
That embarrassment at Altrincham meant that York looked destined to return to regional football, but an upturn in form in the final six matches of the season rescued City from their doom.
Now nearly in December of the next season, the Minstermen top the table in the National League, having enjoyed a thrilling campaign so far that seems unrecognisable compared to that fateful night in Altrincham.
But what has changed for Hinshelwood?
“Just getting players in that you know and can trust a little bit has been key, having good personnel that you know as well,” Hinshelwood told the Press.
“There were quite a few players that had featured for me before in other teams that started the game on Saturday, so getting good people in the building has been massive.
“They seem to have gelled really well together, and it really helps when you’re coming in somewhere and want to implement your own style.
“Having people that you trust and know how you want to play really helps with that.
“I think that if you can always try and take two points per game, that’s a nice little target to have.
“ I think that 44 points from 20 would be good, and 41 would be pretty average!
“I don’t look too much into it really, we’ve got lucky with a few results, had players sent off against us as well which has helped.
“To only lose two in the first 20 would be a really good start, and that’s what we will be looking to do after Tuesday night.”
