YORK City manager Martin Foyle is ready to extend on-loan Gainsborough Trinity winger Adam Smith’s stay at the club.
Smith scored City’s first goal and played a part in the third as the Minstermen recovered from a half-time deficit to secure maximum points during a 3-1 win with Richard Brodie and Onome Sodje joining him on the scoresheet.
The former Chesterfield player was also named sponsors’ man-of-the-match despite only entering the action at the start of the second period, as part of a double substitution that saw Simon Russell also introduced and Mark Robinson and Mark Greaves withdrawn.
Smith’s current loan deal will expire on January 6 and Foyle said: “I’ve spoken to Adam and we just need to make sure things would be all right with Gainsborough as he’s contracted to them.
“We took him on trial at Wrexham when I was there but he picked up a hamstring injury. I’d seen enough though to take a gamble on him though and his pace causes problems.
“He is a very fresh, honest boy who wants that second chance to progress in professional football.”
Foyle added that he hopes City’s first home win in six matches will help settle his side’s nerves at KitKat Crescent.
A poor first half saw City booed off at the interval before Smith’s goal kick-started an impressive comeback.
The Minstermen chief added: “I was right with the supporters and agreed 100 per cent because there was nothing to be positive about in the first half.
“We were nowhere near what I expect from this group of players and looked very, very nervous again.
“We didn’t get the ball down and couldn’t string two passes together. We were just hoofing and we certainly don’t work on that on the training pitch.
“The heads dropped after their goal and I don’t like that. I want them to be braver.
“We played some great football in the second half though and could have scored one or two more. We’ve broken the home hoodoo now and the players might relax a bit more.”
Foyle also shed light on a finger-pointing confrontation between himself and rival boss Liam Daish during the second half after Ebbsfleet left-back Sacha Opinel fell to the ground and required treatment.
The City boss said: “I thought their lad had dived and will stick to my word. He went down screaming when he wasn’t touched.”
Daish refuted that allegation aftewards, responding: “He (Foyle) called one of my players a cheat but I know my players and they are honest so I was disappointed with his comments.”
