FORMER Hartlepool defender Darren Craddock has become York City boss Billy McEwan's first summer signing.

Craddock, 21, impressed during a four-match loan spell at KitKat Crescent in January and February and his permanent arrival has been welcomed by McEwan.

The 6ft tall defender played as a right-back for City but can also operate as a centre-half.

About securing his signature, McEwan said: "He did very well for us last season so we know what he's all about. He's 21 with Football League experience and I am sure he will be a valuable asset for our club.

"He can play in more than one position and will be looking to kick-start his career. He's been released by Hartlepool so he will want to prove them wrong."

Craddock, who has made 33 appearances for Hartlepool and played his last match for the relegated League One club in December, said: "I'm delighted to be returning to the club. It's a very professional set-up and I'm looking forward to the season ahead."

Meanwhile, right-back Jamie Price has been offered a six-month contract to stay at KitKat Crescent.

Price has not been handed a standard ten-month deal as McEwan has concerns over the Normanton-born defender's fitness record.

The ex-Doncaster Rovers full-back started City's first 21 games last term but, after suffering a hernia injury at the end of November, only made four more appearances one as substitute before the end of the campaign.

Now McEwan is hoping that Price, who also had injury problems at his previous club, can prove his fitness during the first half of next season if he decides to stay.

The City boss said: "I have offered Jamie Price a short-term contract because of his fitness levels last season. We had to bring in Darren Craddock and Lee Andrews on loan last season when he was sidelined and I need him to stay injury free.

"I offered him three months at first but he wasn't happy with that so then, after consideration and because he's a great pro, I offered him six months. It's up to him and hopefully he will sign and stay fit."

Neal Bishop, Mark Convery, Clayton Donaldson, James Dudgeon, Darren Dunning, Emmanuel Panther, Nathan Peat and Bryan Stewart have also been offered contract extensions by the Minstermen.

Last season's top scorer Andy Bishop was offered a new deal but has decided to join Bury while City's 2005-06 Player of the Year David McGurk is currently weighing up his options.

The 23-year-old centre back has been offered a one-year contract extension at Darlington, where he returned last month after a season-long loan spell with City.

He has also received interest from other Football League clubs and Darlington are now entitled to seek a compensation fee should McGurk decide to leave the League Two outfit.
