NEWLY-APPOINTED York City Supporters' Trust board member Simon Mallett believes JM Packaging's proposal to become 75 per cent plus one share majority shareholders of the Minstermen is in the club's best interests.

Although he had some reservations about the JMP proposal, he feared rejecting it would plunge the club into crisis.

Mallett added that he had reservations about the Trust's shareholding being reduced from 85 per cent to a 25 per cent less one share interest but feels safeguards are in place to protect KitKat Crescent and control the future actions of JMP, owned by current City managing director Jason McGill.

Mallett, who is also a City vice-president, was one of six temporary appointments on to the Trust board after a spate of resignations.

He said: "I have some reservations about it but consider it is in the best interests of York City for the proposal to go ahead. I do not like the reduction in Trust ownership of the club but, nevertheless, the Trust will still have a significant stake in the club and will still have an important role in its management. It will be able to influence the running of the club and will have a veto over key decisions.

"The proposal will increase the financial security of the club. It will not necessarily be sufficient to solve the club's financial problems. It will, however, make a significant difference and, without it, the club has real financial problems.

"The proposal will also provide continuity and stability in the management of the club as Jason McGill will continue to run the club with the help of the Trust. The safeguards in the proposal provide substantial control over the future actions of JM Packaging and also ensure that any potential equity in Bootham Crescent is retained for investment in a new stadium.

"If the proposal is not passed, the club's future is uncertain. Other parties may step in to save the club, they may not.

"I prefer the imperfect, but existing, proposal, than the turmoil that would follow its rejection because York City would have a future and we can get on with building on the success of last season."
