FOOTBALL fans and York residents have been urged to get behind the Minstermen as they aim for a return to the Football League.
York City will meet Luton Town in the Blue Square Premier play-offs, with the prospect of a trip to Wembley if they win. The first half of the two-leg semi-final takes place at Bootham Crescent tomorow, with the secong leg at Luton’s Kenilworth Road on Monday, May 3.
City’s community and communications director Sophie Hicks is urging supporters to get behind the team.
She said: “Obviously we’re delighted to be in the play-offs, it’s hugely exciting for the club.
“We really want the city of York to get behind their team, as we’ve really got a good chance to get back into the Football League – where we belong.”
City played at the new Wembley last May in the FA Trophy Final and, if they beat Luton over two games, will return there on May 16 to play Oxford United or Rushden and Diamonds.
Longest-serving City player David McGurk is focused on the opportunity of winning promotion.
“Ever since I came here six years ago, getting the club back into the League is everything that everybody talks about. I know how much it would mean to everybody here and I’m sure if we did do it the club would go from strength to strength.”
Tickets are selling fast with some areas almost sold out.
The ticket office will continue to be open until 5pm today.
