YORK City manager Martin Foyle is targeting another five players as he looks to build a squad for the 2010/11 season.

Foyle made his first summer signings this week when Kidderminster right-back Duane Courtney and centre-half Greg Young arrived at Bootham Crescent on free transfers.

Their additions mean the Minstermen currently boast a squad of 14 senior players and two youth-team graduates in Dean Lisles and Jamie Hopcutt.

The City boss is now hoping to add a further quintet of new faces to further bolster his ranks.

He said: “I probably want another four or five players, including a young goalkeeper.

“We’re not a million miles away and I want a settled squad but if it means we are looking at three or four in pre-season that’s what we will do because people will be throwing people our way after last season.”

With Ben Purkiss and Adam Smith leaving for Oxford and Mansfield respectively and Luke Graham speaking to other clubs as he weighs up a contract offer from City, Foyle is foreseeing no more departures and working on the premise that he will still have 37-goal top scorer Richard Brodie to call upon next season.

The City boss insisted he had fielded no inquiries since the end of the season about Brodie, whose current contract expires next summer.

Foyle said: “We’ve had nothing and, if we do, Richard would be the first to know. For me, I don’t want to waste my summer worrying about things that won’t happen.

“Speculation comes from a lot of areas but there’s nothing to hide. Richard’s a fantastic boy, we get on great and I hope he’s still with us come the start of the season. We are also still looking to extend his contract.

“We’ve lost two or three players to other clubs but I didn’t want to rebuild too much so, hopefully, that will be it now.

“When somebody goes though, you just have to back your judgement to bring the next ones in and we are always watching other teams.”

Foyle added that he would be interested in Salisbury striker Matt Tubbs if his home-town club’s appeal against demotion from the Blue Square Premier is unsuccessful but added his wage demands would make a transfer to North Yorkshire highly unlikely.

He said: “You look at everything and everybody as a manager but I don’t know if Salisbury have gone yet so we’ll have to see what happens. Things can change on a daily basis.”

Added the City boss: “He (Tubbs) is a player you would like but you have to be realistic.

“He’s on fantastic money down there – more than my top earner here.”

But the City boss stressed that he was happy with his player budget for next season, while pointing out that Luton’s big spending should guarantee the beaten play-off semi-finalists promotion next term.

Foyle said: “The chairman has been great and given me his 100 per cent backing. I hope the supporters appreciate that because, in these hard times, a lot of clubs will be making cuts.

“It has obviously helped, bringing the money in from our cup runs and the play-off final, and hopefully he has trust in what I am trying to do.

“I know Grimsby and Darlington will be pushing on and I think Luton will probably walk the division; with another 12 clubs competing for the play-offs.

“You probably won’t need as many points to get in them next season though.”
