HOT shot George Purcell has one aim for his York City career – goals.

Having signed for the Minstermen on a two-year deal, for an undisclosed fee, the 22-year-old has targeted a striking spree in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

League and non-League clubs made inquiries about the striker, who scored 20 goals in Blue Square South for Braintree last season, but Purcell says he is delighted with his move to York.

And he is not fazed by the prospect of having to unseat one of City’s top trio of strikers – Richard Brodie, Michael Rankine and Michael Gash – to get a place in the side.

“I scored 20 last season. That’s what I am here for – hopefully to score goals,” he said. “That’s what I did last season and we will see what happens from there. I am not going to worry about other players. I am just going to concentrate on myself.

“I will go through pre-season, do well, and hopefully the gaffer sees something in me and I get a start. From there I hope to progress on.”

On his decision to move north from Essex, Purcell said he was after a change of scenery – and he said, despite the League interest, it was York who put in an offer which Braintree were prepared to accept.

He added: “I wanted to move away from my area just to get my head down and play football. York is the right place. It’s a nice city.

When the offer came in, I was happy to get my chance and come and see what I can do here.

“It was tempting (to go into the League) but a lot of the League clubs didn’t put in offers that Braintree would accept.

“York was one of the ones they accepted – and obviously the League clubs were out of it at that time, but moving up here is fine. I am not leaving anything back at home. I want to get pre-season over and done with and start the games.

“I know Gashy and Neil Barrett, they are both good lads and I’ve met all the other boys and they seem fine.

“Neil has said all the boys are good lads and they all get together and it seems that way so I am quite happy.”

Purcell revealed he would bring versatility to Foyle’s striking options.

“I like to run at players,” he added. “I am quick, getting the ball in behind and I always shoot really early – trying to get my shot away as quickly as possible. I like to play people in as well.

“I am versatile – inside or outside of the box. I am left footed and I like to go down the wing sometimes and put balls in the box.

“I am looking forward to it very much. The set-up looks really good. Obviously last year they missed out on promotion but they have brought a few other players in and, hopefully, we can get automatic promotion and take it from there.

“I want to try and score as many goals as I can and play as many games as I can and do as well as I can.”
