York City fans have been urged to attend tomorrow’s City of York Council meeting.

The meeting – in the Guildhall, off St Helen’s Square in York – will see the executive of the council give its recommendations to the full council on the proposed new community stadium.

The meeting starts at 6.30pm and fans’ pressure group A Stadium For York, have appealed to supporters to attend.

It is understood councillors will be asked to approve a further £198,000 of funding to move the project on to the next stage.

As much visible support as possible in the public gallery is being encouraged by the pressure group, who will present – via one of the councillors – a petition asking the council to do everything in its power to ensure a stadium is built by 2015.

It was just over a week ago that it was announced by the ruling executive that the preferred location for the new 6,000 all-seater home for the city’s professional football club and rugby league club York City Knights, was at Monks Cross.

Simon Mallett, one of the organisers of the campaign to encourage the building of the stadium said: “This is another crucial step on the road towards a new stadium for the whole of York and North Yorkshire.

“Combining sports and community facilities in one place is an efficient and cost-effective way of making this affordable.

“We strongly encourage the councillors to give this project the green light.”
