York City manager Martin Foyle has categorically stated that star striker Richard Brodie will be kicking off the new season at Bootham Crescent.

Foyle has responded to frenzied speculation that last season’s 37-goal striker is poised to leave the club and has also rubbished internet reports that suggested summer signing Jonathon Smith has moved on to Rotherham.

The City chief has made the unusual move ahead of tomorrow’s opening pre-season friendly against Hull City (3pm) as he is concerned the rumours could have a negative impact on supporter morale at the club.

He said: “Jonathan Smith has been training with me all week, he has signed a two-year deal here, will play against Hull and kick off the season at York City.

“There’s no substance in all the rumours about Richard Brodie either and he will start the season at York City as well.

“I hope this stops all the speculation as I fear that it can be disruptive to season-ticket sales.”

City will be without a whole back four against the Tigers with David McGurk, Duane Courtney and Greg Young all ruled out, along with James Meredith, who is continuing his recuperation for a summer operation on his knee.

Foyle added: “We only have three defenders fit to play but we will have to get on with it. It’s just match practice really and we can’t take any risks, but I’m a bit disappointed to go into the first game without those four.

“Duane Courtney has a bit of a sore knee and could be back for Tuesday, David McGurk has a minor calf problem which might mean he’s out for a bit longer while Greg Young stepped on a stone during his holiday and has some deep bruising that needed an injection. James Meredith is back in training but there would be no sense in rushing him back.”

Meredith’s absence means 21-year-old left-back Andy McWilliams could play after failing to start a senior game last season.

Said Foyle: “I know what the kid can do and he’s been super for us in the past.”

First-year professional Jamie Hopcutt, meanwhile, is playing pre-season friendlies for North Ferriby with the view to a loan move.

Foyle is also hoping for an improved playing surface during the 2010/11 campaign after summer drainage work.
