YORK City manager Martin Foyle is considering a loan move for Leeds United full-back Liam Darville after summer signing Duane Courtney missed last night’s 3-1 friendly victory at Market Drayton Town.

Courtney is the only recognised senior right-back in City’s ranks but has so far completed only one half of City’s six pre-season fixtures due to a knee injury.

The City boss had a look at club captain Daniel Parslow and second-year apprentice Jonny Andrew in the role last night but may turn to Darville again, who has spent the last fortnight on trial at Bootham Crescent although he is now with League One outfit Tranmere on a similar basis.

Centre-back Greg Young, who has only completed 28 minutes since his arrival from Altrincham in June, was also absent last night but his bruised foot injury is not as damaging with the likes of Parslow, David McGurk and Djoumin Sangare competing for places at the heart of City’s defence.

Foyle said: “The injuries are majorly disappointing because I want both players on the pitch and they want to be on the pitch. Greg has seen a chiropodist and he will take part at North Ferriby on Saturday.

“Duane’s also had a scan and got the all clear. There are no problems there so, hopefully, he can crack on now but, with the start of the season ten days away, I am having to audition people at right-back.

“Liam Darville’s in my mind and I might need to think about bringing him in now although he was playing for Tranmere last night.”

The City boss added last night’s match, which saw Neil Barrett, Chris Carruthers and Michael Rankine get on the scoresheet, served its purpose in terms of exposing a little pre-season rustiness, especially in attacking areas. He said: “A few were blowing so it was a great workout for us and it’s encouraging to get midfielders on the scoresheet.

“It was a good bit of play and a nice finish for Neil’s goal and Chris Carruthers’ was a fantastic strike.

“They did not give up and got their goal but, overall, we have got to be better up front. We could have scored five or six on another day and you could see Michael Rankine needs games big time. We need to be proactive and work hard in that final third.”

Foyle’s 18-year-old son, Lee, also appeared in a City shirt for the last ten minutes, but the City chief was keen to point out that he was only making up numbers for the visitors, saying: “Dean Lisles pulled out so we were another defender down.

“Lee plays for Market Drayton so I just asked if he could sit on our bench as I did not want all the defenders playing 90 minutes, and I don’t want a song and dance of it.”
