TOURNAMENTS worth more than £10 million will be the driving force behind Simon Dyson’s bid for a storming finish to the year.

The world number 68 posted a top five finish in the almost successful defence of his Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland last week on his return to the European Tour.

Before his three-week break Dyson had also notched three top-ten finishes to just miss out on a place in the European Ryder Cup team for their Celtic Manor collision against the USA.

Tomorrow, the York-born Dyson is back on European Tour duty in the Portugal Masters, which starts a run of four tournaments across Europe and the Far East all ramping up a prize fund topping £10 million before leading to the final event of the season, the Dubai world championship at the Jumeirah course at the end of November.

The conclusion in Dubai carries its own separate prize fund of almost £7 million.

Before his gallant bid at St Andrews to hold on to the Alfred Dunhill trophy, the Malton & Norton player told The Press he was determined to put together a startling finish to the season.

His form at the Dunhill, including a flawless six-under-par 66 on the final day at St Andrews, is evidence of his form being as hot as it was before his Ryder Cup anguish.

Aware at the hectic schedule to the year, Dyson said: “I like playing regular, it helps to keep my form up.

“So it’s Portugal tomorrow, then Valderrama, followed by Singapore and Hong Kong before finishing in Dubai. So let’s see.”

Also in tomorrow’s field at the Oceanico Victoria course in Vilamoura is Harrogate Golf Club’s John Parry, who was third in the Dunhill, and Rotherham’s Danny Willett, runner-up to USPGA champion Martin Kaymer at St Andrews.

Willett is coached by The Oaks GC head professional Graham Walker.
