LUTON Town manager Richard Money believed abandoning his side’s home match with York City on Saturday represented a “sensible decision”.

Halesowen referee Andy Hendley called an end to proceedings in the 56th minute of the Kenilworth Road clash after persistent snow showers worsened.

Former Liverpool defender Money said: “It was a sensible decision. (City boss) Gary Mills and I got together with the fourth official because we couldn’t see when the snow came down like a blizzard.

“Neither side wanted to lose the game because of a mistake and, while I apologise to the supporters, I think they understood the decision as the reception from both sets of fans showed at the end.”

Home and away spectators applauded in unison after Hendley called both sets of players off the pitch.

Money, meanwhile, defended the decision not to postpone the game earlier to avoid wasted and treacherous trips for City fans, given the adverse weather forecast.

The Hatters boss added: “The pitch was perfectly playable at the start. Some parts were a bit firm but the rest was soft, so much so that the players wore studs.

“We just hoped the snow was going to fall later to enable us to finish the match.”

Like Mills, Money also felt that both teams acquitted themselves on the snow-covered pitch, saying: “The players made a real good fist of it and it was a decent game of football.

“It did not become an up and under match as you might expect in such conditions.”

The home manager did concede, however, that he was forced to change his tactics after the interval with the Minstermen, fielding a 4-3-3 formation as opposed to the hosts’ 4-4-2 line up, having won the first-half midfield battle.

“We were outnumbered in the middle of the park,” Money admitted. “We could not switch play to the wings as we like to do because of the conditions and I thought we had to change it to get an extra man in there.”
