York City youth team captain Tom Richardson has been released by the club.

Richardson, who made the Minstermen’s first-team bench at Wrexham in September under previous manager Martin Foyle, has been told he is surplus to requirements at Bootham Crescent.

Current chief Gary Mills ran the rule over Richardson during a three-week trial training with the first team at the end of the Blue Square Bet Premier campaign and his departure means none of last season’s second-year scholars have been retained for 2011/2.

Club secretary Nick Bassett, meanwhile, has also left the club after five-and-a-half years. Bassett succeeded Nigel Pleasants in the role in October 2005 but has left by mutual consent.

Explaining his reasons for moving on, Bassett said: “I have enjoyed my time at York City and the high points have definitely been the two Wembley finals in the last two seasons. Due to time and travel pressures, I have decided to move on to pastures new and look forward to challenges ahead.

“I wish everyone at the club the very best for the future and hope to see York City back in the Football League soon.”

City chairman Jason McGill added: “On behalf of everyone at York City, I would like to thank Nick for all his hard work and efforts over the past five years. We have appreciated his contribution and wish him all the very best with his future career.”

The club will stage an awards presentation night at the Pitchside Bar on Monday night.

Admission is free for the evening, which will begin at 7.30pm, with the Billy Fenton Clubman of the Year, the McGill Players’ Player of the Year, the Community Player of the Year and the Youth Team Player of the Year all to be unveiled.
