LUTON Town striker Jason Walker is the subject of a renewed bid from York City to secure his services.
Walker, then at Barrow, was tracked by City boss Gary Mills last autumn when he took over the managerial reins at Bootham Crescent.
The Minstermen lost out to Luton, though in November, with Fleetwood also believed to have been interested in doubling the 5ft 7in forward’s wages.
But Walker, 27, was only handed eight league starts by the Hatters last season and The Press understands there is a clause in his Kenilworth Road contract that allows him to leave if any interested club are prepared to stump up a transfer fee of a pre-determined amount.
It is believed Luton could be reluctant to sell Walker to City, though, considering the animosity and rivalry that has grown between the clubs over the past two Blue Square Bet Premier campaigns even though Mills put that aside when he sanctioned Alex Lawless’ transfer to Bedfordshire last season.
While steering clear of commenting on potential petty stumbling blocks, Mills reiterated the admiration for Walker he first expressed in The Press last season, saying: “From the moment I came to York City, I wanted to bring him here. He went to Luton but he’s a player I would love to get to York.
“We’ll have to wait and see whether we can do that. I’m certain they would want a fee and it could be dependent on how much they want but, along with the chairman, we are working hard to bring him in and I believe he would complete our frontline if we are successful.”
Despite being overlooked for most of the campaign by Luton, ex-Greenock Morton forward Walker still totalled 17 goals for the season after a prolific first three months at Barrow.
He also finished 2009/10 on 21 goals for the struggling Bluebirds and is a proven marksman at Blue Square Bet Premier level as Mills aims to boost his team’s firepower for next term.
Mills feels the acquisition of Kidderminster winger Matty Blair, who netted 11 times in the league for the Harriers last season, has already given his team greater goalscoring options.
He added: “I’m delighted we’ve brought Matty in because he’s a player I’ve had my eye on for a couple of years and he’s developed well. He had a fantastic campaign last season in our division. He’s a good age at 21 and there were a few clubs after him.
“He’s a wide player with pace and is hungry to do well and further his career. For me, that type of player is imperative for what we want to achieve next season so to get him on a two-year contract is fantastic.
“It’s no secret we were lacking in goals from the area he plays in last season. I need my wide men to weigh in with the system I want to play and it’s a problem that I think he can address.”
Mills added he was unperturbed by centre-back Greg Young’s decision to join Blue Square Bet Premier new boys Alfreton.
The former Altrincham defender was one of a clutch of out-of-contract players at Bootham Crescent whose futures Mills had remained non-committal on. The City boss said: “He knew he wasn’t really in my plans.
“When I came to the club I brought in Chris Smith and, with Dan Parslow and David McGurk as centre-backs as well, I think those three take some beating at this level. Greg’s a good honest lad who will compete for you but not quite the player I wanted.”
• Fleetwood Town have signed Wrexham striker Andy Mangan.
