YORK City manager Gary Mills praised his former club Grantham Town for giving his players an “excellent workout” in last night’s friendly win.
The Minstermen won 2-0 after second-half goals from Adriano Moké and Jason Walker but Mills was pleased by the competitive nature of his side’s fifth pre-season outing.
He said: “Sometimes you can play professional clubs and the pace can be a bit slow but they gave us an excellent workout and we had to be competitive because they were. They wanted to win and it took a couple of quality goals to beat them.”
Midfielder Scott Kerr missed last night’s match and Ashley Chambers also asked to be substituted in the closing stages but Mills added that neither problem was serious, saying: “Scott Kerr’s injury is not a major one.
“He got a bang on his ankle at Garforth and got another knock on it again in training so we decided not to risk him. Ash came off with a tight hamstring but I think that was just down to tiredness as he’s been working hard.”
