STRIKER Jamie Reed wants to welcome in the big 30 this season, writes Steve Carroll.
The York City forward has set himself the ambitious goals target as he bids to be the man that finally fires the Minstermen into the Football League.
A year ago, Reed was banging them in at Bangor in the Welsh Premier League. Now, following the second half of last season at York which yielded nine goals, the 23-year-old fans’ favourite plans to continue his scoring streak in the upcoming Blue Square Bet Premier campaign.
“The last three seasons, I have set myself a target of 30 goals,” said Reed ahead of today’s Bootham Crescent game against Bolton.
“I hit it two seasons ago, I had 28 altogether last season at Bangor and York, so it’s 30 again – if I can get in and around there I would be made up.
“Touch wood I won’t get injured and it is about consistency – to try and score in every game that I play and hopefully I am going to try and get on the penalties.”
Reed has already gained a reputation for netting spectacular strikes. His left-footed volley in the 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town and an equally impressive strike against Luton were just the pick of his finishes and saw manager Gary Mills compare him to Liverpool icon David Fairclough.
But the forward isn’t bothered how he scores his goals this season, as long as he does.
“Things have gone well,” added Reed, of his last 12 months. “I had a good start at Bangor and it helped me get my move here. I had a good end to the season and, hopefully, I can push on this season.
“I have always had that knack of scoring goals. I have come into this level and, thankfully, I have been able to step up.
“As a striker, I have always prided myself on being a poacher and getting those little tap-ins. That’s what every striker is good at but, obviously, it’s nice to get a volley or a header – something a bit different – but every goal is a goal. They all count.”
He added: “I want to do the best I can, get as many goals as I can, and finish top scorer.
“We are all optimistic and everyone is really confident. It’s a confident set of lads and hopefully we will gel together.”
