YORK City chairman Jason McGill said the club would “do what we can” to bring Jonathan Smith back to Bootham Crescent.

He confirmed he was in talks with Swindon Town chairman Jeremy Wray regarding the possible return of the 25-year-old, who has been transfer listed at the League One club.

Smith was a key part of Paolo Di Canio’s League Two-winning squad last season and it is his experience in that division, as well as the impact he made during his previous spell at York, which has alerted manager Gary Mills.

McGill said: “I am, at this moment, in discussions with the chairman of Swindon Town (regarding Jonathan Smith). He is a player we would love to see back.

“He is a player that has experienced promotion and we will do what we can to bring him back.”

When asked about the prospect of Smith’s return, assistant manager Darron Gee added: “The two chairman are trying to sort a deal out and that’s really as far as it goes at the moment. Of course, we would like him back.

“You don’t want to lose your best players and, the year before, he was outstanding. He had the opportunity to go and play in League Two and he has done it at that level and played a number of games at that level. His return would be a massive boost to the football club. I’m delighted he’s on the radar but there is a lot of work to be done.”
